American Red Cross Call For Nurses

The American Red Cross is seeking up to 200 licensed nurses for deployment anywhere in the US in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Licensed nurses need to be available to be deployed NLT the end of September, 2005, and will be on assignment for a minimum of 2 weeks. Nurses may be deployed to work at service centers, to do outreach in urban and rural areas, to work in shelters, at feeding sites, in client homes, at Red Cross chapters, or at disaster relief operation headquarters. Specific duties include providing healthcare, first-aid and casework for disaster clients. Outeach to affected homes/communities may include working from a vehicle or on foot, and may include casework in an area affected by the disaster done by a multi-activity team. Client home visits include pre-scheduled visit to client's residence possibly done by multi-activity teams. The nurses will receive technical supervision from a health services supervisor and an evaluation by the work site manager.

Qualifications:

Nurse with current, active unencumbered license; CPR and First Aid qualified. Ability to assess and triage life threatening health emergencies, and to provide emergency assistance for minor illnesses and injuries. Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including able to write legibly when completing forms, and proficiency in using computers. Able to manage multiple priorities/tasks simultaneously and to communicate with clients in a sympathetic and caring manner, being sensitive in human interactions to diversity and inclusiveness. Able to promote, develop and maintain productive and amicable working relationships with diverse individuals and groups, including peers and supervisors. Federal employees, possibly including nurses, are among those missing in areas affected by the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina. The Veterans Administration seeks help locating approximately 1,500 of its employees in the affected areas.

VA employees should call (888) 766-2747 to provide their name, position title, location, and a contact number. Displaced employees also may contact the VA through the website www.va.gov/opa/katrina/contact_Info.cfm.
